Justin Martyr
Justin Martyr stated it was the Gnostic belief that teaches there is no intermediate state, and that mankind upon death are immediately taken to heaven:
You may have fallen in with some who are called Christians. However, they do not admit this, and they venture to blaspheme the God of Abraham… They say there is no resurrection of the dead. Rather, they say that when they die, their souls are taken to heaven. Do not imagine they are Christians.
- Justin Martyr, (c.160, E, 1.239)
Tertullian
How indeed, will the soul mount up to heaven, where Christ is already sitting ath the Father's right hand? For the archangels's trumpet has not yet been heard by the command of God… To no one is heaven openend… When the world indeed, will pass away, then the kingdom of heaven will be opened.
- Tertullian (c. 210, W)
”¶The heavens are the heavens of Yahweh, But the earth He has given to the sons of men. It is not the dead that praise Yah, And it is none of those who go down to silence; But as for us, we will bless Yah From now until forever. Praise Yah!“ Psalms 115:16-18 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/psa.115.16-18.LSB
”But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming.“ 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/1co.15.20-23.LSB
”But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.“ 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/1th.4.13-17.LSB
