How to study the Bible for yourself

Disclaimer

I do not agree with a lot of the doctrines described in this book, but there is a lot of wisdom on how to study which we can apply in our own studies.

Introduction

This is a summary of all the information presented in the book by Tim LaHaye, How to study the Bible for yourself. But without most of the fluf and 'bad' doctrine

How to read the Bible

  • Read daily,
  • Read on a set time,
  • Read in the same spot,
  • Read with pencil in hand, ready to write things down,
  • Read with dedication,
  • Keep a daily spiritual journal containing
    1. Date
    2. Which part of the Bible you were reading
    3. Gods message for you today
    4. A promise of God
    5. A commandment to keep
    6. A timeless principle
    7. How can you apply the things written above

Methods of reading the Bible

  1. Read whole books
  2. Read a book multiple times
  3. Read according to your needs
  4. Read the bible as a whole

A formula for teaching yourself self discipline

  1. Read when you want to, read when you don't want to
  2. Make a promise to God (don't recommend)
  3. Don't make exceptions

What do you have to read in the Bible

3 year plan

First year

  1. Read 1 John, seven times
  2. Read John, twice
  3. Read Marc, twice
  4. Read the short letters of Paul (Galatians, Ephesians, Filippenzen, Kolossenzen, 1 and 2 Thessalonicenzen, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus and Filemon
  5. Read Luke
  6. Read Acts
  7. Read Romans
  8. Read the New Testament, twice

Second year

  1. Read the wisdom books of the Old Testament
    1. In 4 months read Proverbs, Psalms, Job and Songs of Solomo
    2. Read a chapter of Proverbs each day (completing it 4 times in 4 months)
    3. After 3,5 months you complete the other books, and for the rest of the days you can read Psalms you liked to read.
  2. Read the following parts a month each
    1. 1 John
    2. Ephesians
    3. Filippenzen
    4. 1 Thessalonicenzen
    5. Jakobus
    6. Romeinen 5-8
    7. John 14-17

Third year This year you read the whole Bible in a year

  1. 1 chapter NT daily (completed after 313 days)
  2. 2 chapters OT daily
  3. 5 chapters OT on Sunday (or Shabbat of-course)

Study the Bible per book

Fundamental questions

  1. Name of the book
  2. How many times did you read it?
  3. Date
  4. Writer?
  5. What were his circomstances, when writing the book?
  6. For whom did he write the book?
  7. Write something about the writer
  8. Where did the writer write this book?
  9. Why did the writer write this book?
  10. What were the most important problems?
  11. Which solutions were given?
  12. What was the the general meaning in that time?
  13. What is the general meaning today?

  1. Name of the book

  3. Sumary of the most important theme
  4. Key verse
  5. Description
