Zowel in de Statenvertaling als in de King James Version word shamayim vertaald naar het enkelfout hemel, maar het woord mayim word vertaald met wateren. (im) achter een woord zoals in shamayim en mayim geeft in het Hebreews een mannelijk meerfout aan1). Daardoor denk ik dat hemelen meerfout eerder van toepassing zou zijn op deze versen dan hemel enkelfout. In veel Engelstalige Bijbels hebben ze daar ook voor gekozen. Van de Nederlandstalige Bijbels die op bible.com staan (de website versie van de YouVersion Bible app) heeft alleen de 'Het Boek' vertaling hemelen gebruikt.
In vers acht staat dat God het uitspansel (firmament) hemel(en) noemt, je zou kunnen zeggen dat elke keer als de hemel(en) word genoemt in de schriften dat het terug verwijst naar het uitspansel (firmament).
Als je een huis maakt uit hout, stenen, spijkers en schroeven. Als je het dan af hebt en je neemt een stap terug en kijkt naar het volledige wat je hebt gebouwd. Zeg je dan “Kijk naar mijn hout, stenen, spijkers en schroeven” of zeg je “Kijk naar mijn huis.”
De hemel is niet een etherisch, schimmig spook land of een extra dimensionaal sterrenstelsel. Het is een fysieke structuur boven ons hoofd.

Home analogy
If you make a home out of wood, stone, nails and screws. When you complete it and take a step back, you don't say “Look at my wood, stone, nails and screws” but you say “Look at my home”.
Heaven is not some etherial, whispy ghost land of an extra dimencional galaxy. It is a physical structure above our heads.
If we live on a ball spinning in space, how do we have a atmosphere, a breadable gas that excists next to a vacum. The vacuum would suck it all off and we wouldn't be able to breathe. Air pressure can only exist in a container, that why God created a container above our heads.
Is Genesis 1 literal or figurative
